Research culture

“Research culture encompasses the behaviours, values, expectations, attitudes, and norms of our research communities. It influences researchers' career paths and determines how research is conducted and communicated. Research culture is about how research happens and how it is experienced by the people involved, from academics to participants to research-enabling staff.”  - The Royal Society

DMU has a vibrant, inclusive and collaborative research culture, supported by our Research Strategy. As a university committed to the public good, we pursue research that impacts society and makes a real difference to people’s live.

Research Culture is at the heart of our Empowering University strategy, which highlights the importance of interdisciplinary research, knowledge exchange, and nurturing the next generation of diverse researchers.

Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) are an integral part of our research culture, making vital contributions to our research and impact and informing our teaching. Through our diverse and talented community of PGRs, we have a positive, interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment, one that celebrates and welcomes diversity and promotes equality and inclusion.

The Doctoral College here at DMU supports PGRs and academic researchers, providing training, development, support and guidance to help everyone achieve their full potential.   We aim to enrich the intellectual life of the University, enabling PGRs in particular to carry out advanced study and prepare for academic and professional life, developing excellent research skills that enhance their future career whether in academia or more widely.

As part of this mission, we provide a comprehensive Researcher Development Programme, an annual  as part of our Research and Innovation Festival as well the Three Minute Thesis competition.
