Here at DMU we want to ensure the best possible experience for our students, empowering you to reach your goals. Your feedback is essential in helping to shape what DMU looks like for future students, and we’re committed to listening to your feedback to bring about change and enhancements.

Mental wellbeing services

  • Should you ever need one-to-one support, the Healthy DMU team offers single point-of-access appointments (SPAs) where you can discuss your situation with a member of support staff from Wellbeing Services.
  • There are free online mental well-being resources available to you too. Our DMU mindfulness practitioners have produced a series of podcasts offering guided meditation to help you take a break and connect with your breathing.
  • DMU students have access to Student Space and Togetherall, trusted platforms that provide students with confidential support via text, phone, emails and webchats.
  • A free programme of masterclasses is also available for you to book on to, and students who attend four or more sessions will have this recognised as an achievement on their Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR).
  • These include bespoke workshops to help students develop skills to support their friends, explore hobby and craft activities to allow students to relax, and a fortnightly social group for students with ADHD to meet, discuss diagnosis and develop organisational skills.
  • Our DMUactive sessions provide you with an array of free physical activities designed for students who want to try something new or develop their physical abilities.
  • We support our clubs and athletes by offering strength and conditioning sessions and bursary schemes to encourage students to stay active and develop transferable skills.
  • Taking care of your physical health is particularly important while studying at university. The Healthy DMU team is on hand to help all our students make healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Confidential support sessions for students looking for help with drug and alcohol use are provided through Turning Point. Sessions are run throughout the academic year and take place between 1.30pm and 5pm in De Montfort Student Union, Pod Space.
  • Information on sexual health, vaccinations, GP registration, meal-prepping and advice on stopping smoking is available through the Healthy DMU Hub.
  • Healthy lifestyle choices aren’t just limited to your physical and mental health. Your financial health is just as important. DMU’s Student Finance team is located in Student Gateway but also delivers support, advice and guidance online, which can be accessed here.
  • From budgeting tips to advice on household bills or grants available, the Student Finance and Welfare team is on hand to help you.

 

Learning resources

  • We implemented LearningZone, a new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) supporting a wide range of activities and more tailored student support.
  • Following student feedback, the MyDMU app has been refreshed with a new and improved look and feel and the ability to personalise the services that are available.
  • You asked for access to the latest technology, so we purchased the Bodyswaps VR platform and headsets with access to the very latest in AI soft skills training.
  • Building on the new spaces of 2022, we’ve added additional Cintique screens, Wacon One drawing tablets and upgraded PCs, a dedicated life drawing room and still life/projection room
  • We've added six large group study booth this summer and introduced four sound insulating group pod rooms on the Ground Floor which you tell us you love! We’ve also renewed the LED wall lighting in the individual study rooms and added extra "smart wall" paint to the syndicate rooms
  • We've invested in Libby, which extends our physical Leisure Reading Collection with access to thousands of hobby and leisure magazines, e-books and audio books direct to your mobile or tablet
  • We increased the number of Adobe student home licences to allow students full access to Adobe Creative Cloud off campus from personal devices.
  • We enhanced our online security by adding Multi factor Authentication (MFA) protection on student accounts.
  • We provide a sustainability grant scheme for students to fund their own sustainability related projects on campus.
  • We opened a new and dedicated space on Campus called the Careers Hub for students to drop in whenever they want or need support from us. Following feedback, we have kept a mix of face-to-face and online appointments, making it easier for you to access the support when you need it.
  • A new online ChatBot service was introduced, providing 24/7 support for students
  • Annual teaching spaces have been updated, with over 800 desktops refreshed and audio-visual hardware uplifted in 36 teaching spaces across campus.
  • Following feedback, we are increasing the number of games with bleacher seating, allowing us to host 200-300 student spectators.
  • We've renewed 48 booth tables, bought dozens of comfy new operator chairs and introduced new padded chairs with wheels in The Deck and the new study pods
  • We’ve installed new, modern access gates with wider lanes in the Library. We’ve added an additional accessible lane to increase capacity and help with wheeled luggage
  • We created concise resources on LearningZone, removing duplicate information and making better use of links to key material, for a better learning experience. 
  • Additional video resources have been provided to support technical workshop activities 
  • New studio space has been fit out to mimic professional practice and offer a better space for collective learning. 

 

Student voice

  • You told us that sustainability is key, so we provide students and staff with accredited training on climate issues through the Carbon Literacy Project and corporate sustainability has been worked into all forms of teaching and learning.
  • The Careers team are recruiting to a student advisory panel that will allow you to directly feed your ideas to the Careers Team service so we can ensure we are delivering the events, programmes and activities that you want.
  • You told us that you didn’t know how to access the careers service, so we asked for your thoughts and rebranded the Careers Team.

 

Learning opportunities

  • You said you wanted to develop life-long skills and gain confidence to secure graduate employment and enter the professional world, so the Alumni team worked with the Careers Team to deliver a ‘Final Year, Future You’ programme.
  • We support the transition for final years into becoming alumni, and even after that transition, it’s DMUforLife.
  • The alumni hub, a free digital community and networking platform, keeps you connected with fellow alumni and in contact with everything happening at DMU.
  • To help you get into work, we host a jobs board with opportunities from DMU, business partners and fellow alumni.
  • We offer mentorship opportunities from experienced graduates.
  • Resources and support events are available to help you through recruitment, employment and personal life.
  • Following feedback, we introduced placement blocks to allow you more time working in your field. We also created more opportunities with leadership and private healthcare providers. 
  • When students felt that not enough guidance was provided, we ensured that we were signposting to exemplar services in coursework support workshops and provided additional sources. 
  • Faculties are providing additional careers support with school wide events and developing a calendar of employability events and information resource on Learning Zone 

 

Freedom of expression

  • You wanted to find solutions to issues hindering the student experience of marginalised communities, so we enhanced our Decolonising DMU programme and became the first institution in the UK to receive a silver award in the Race Equality Charter (REC).
  • We displayed an umbrella installation in the Campus Centre to raise awareness around neurodiversity.
  • Our Disability History Month events celebrate the lives of disabled people past and present and commemorate their achievements.
  • We celebrated the heritage, history, arts, culture and accomplishments of African, Caribbean and South Asian diasporas in the UK throughout Black History Month.
  • We embraced equality for International Women’s Day, raising awareness about historic and current issues of gender inequality.
  • As part of our DMU Pride celebrations, we shared a Queer Quotes display in the Campus Centre.
  • We provide competitive sporting opportunities for our students, from those looking to compete for the very first time, through to those more experienced in competition.
  • You wanted more opportunities to try out different sports, so we hosted open and inclusive sports taster sessions.
  • To help reduce food miles, we have established an allotment on campus where staff and students can grow their own food.
  • We are developing a wildflower area on campus to support local biodiversity.
  • To encourage low carbon travel and reduce travel costs, we offer secure cycle parking on campus.
  • We recognised your hard work and are strengthening our sporting community at our annual Varsity series and celebration evening.

Teaching on my course

  • You asked for more guest speakers and travel/study opportunities, so faculties have booked interesting and engaging guest lectures for academic and employability development.

Assessment and feedback

  • You asked for more time between assessments, so we reworked the assessment map to ensure at least five days between deadlines.
  • You felt that feedback was not consistent, so we created level specific grade and feedback descriptors and encouraged the use of annotations and free comments in feedback.
  • To ensure clear understanding of assessments, new mark schemes have been developed with more descriptive exemplars of what is required for each grade boundary.
  • In response to student feedback, changes were made to level six extended essay timetables.

Academic support

  • You asked for more support with teacher training applications, so we delivered an event during induction week giving you direct access to all the top local teacher training providers, to ask questions and discuss your requirements.
  • There was some difficulty in accessing tutors, so we introduced a new and improved booking system.

Organisation and management

  • Timetables have been condensed to ensure all regular teaching across levels four to six is consistent.
  • We created a new level specific personal tutor system and provided tutors with additional hours for group meetings throughout the year
